The following information will hopefully guide you
in the right direction, if you decided you would
like to pay Little Lever canal a visit for a days
fishing. The actual stretch of this canal at is no
more than 400 metres long and is blocked off at
either end, therefore the fish cannot travel
anywhere other than on this part of the canal, many
clubs have run this water in the past however at the
moment it's free fishing. I have fished this canal
many times before so I would say that I am quite
familiar with the feeding patterns and what are the
best baits to use.
The canal stocks quite a few species of
fish ranging from Carp, Bream, Tench,
Roach, Perch and Pike so there is everything for
everyone in here. People have tried and tested all
kinds of methods and baits on this canal and many
would agree with me when I say worm is the best bait
to use, the only problem is when fishing with worms you are likely to tempt a pike
into your swim. These pike are only Jack size but
can become a bit of a nuisance. My advice is when
using worm on this water it's best to cut them in to
small pieces of around 20mm long, by carrying out
this procedure you will find the pike stay away.
Hot Fishing Spots:
As you can see in the picture above
(mid) my rods are positioned in the basin of the
canal towards the fallen tree, this is where I have
had most of my success. In the
same picture, only to the left there is a sunken
Barge, you can't really see it in the picture but
again another supper place for carp and tench. In the
picture top left on the right hand side is another
sunken Barge and when the carp
spawn they tend to hang around the here doing what
they do, very interesting to watch.
Best Baits:
For the carp I would recommend you
used wild strawberry flavoured boilies, the size of
bait is important on this canal so it's advisable to
use small baits of 10/12 mm hair rigged boilies
along with a small offering of freebies concealed in
a PVA bag. To catch other species
worm is the best bait to use however maggots, sweet
corn, bread and caster have all been proven by
myself and work a treat. It is also recommended that
you use a quality ground bait mixed with chopped
worms, I found that this helps to keep the fish in
the swim making your day much more enjoyable.
Disability Access:
Disability access is is fine however
you will have to fish the toe path side only, the
other side would be out of bounds due to the rough
terrain.
Car Parking:
There is ample car parking, the car
park can be found at the bottom end of Ladyshore
road and head past the horse stables.
Where to find Little Lever Canal:
Little Lever canal can be found
using you Manchester A-Z on page 48 grid reference
5c just follow the road as far as you can go. Not to
long ago I used to help clear this canal by means of
work parties, we spent 2 months going every Sunday
morning then the club which run it at the time
decided they no longer wanted it. The amount of
debris we took out was unbelievable, from old bikes
to car bonnet lids as well as all the over grown
weed. (We all worked hard on that canal) I think
that's why I like fishing it.
I hope you have found the
information presented useful, if you decide to go to
Little Lever canal for a days fishing then please
send in your pictures of your catch and we will
display them in our gallery.
